Teagan Bremner is excited about the new Aberdeen Grammar women’s team and is encouraging others who are based in the local area to get involved and give rugby a go.
Head coach Euan Bell is delighted with how things are going so far after training began on August 13.
And players from all over are being encouraged to head along to training sessions at Rubislaw on Thursday evenings between 7pm and 8.30pm.
“I was chatting to my team mates and friends from the Robert Gordon University women’s rugby section one evening about trying to create a club rugby team in co-operation with Aberdeen Grammar,” Bremner, one of the senior players within the new set up, said.
“Grammar felt like a natural choice as the university has quite a few connections through players being already involved at the club. A number of the Grammar players also help coach men’s and women’s rugby at the university.
“Training at Grammar has just begun and already players have come together from all sorts of different backgrounds and with different levels of experience and it has been great to see.
“So far the focus has been on basic skills, fitness and everyone integrating together and it has been really fun.
“Euan Bell is our head coach and he is being supported by his Grammar men’s team mate Steven Rutledge who is currently out injured.
“A lot of the people who have so far shown an interest in getting involved with Grammar are either current or former RGU players.
“While those links give us a strong base, the Grammar team is for anyone to join and there has been strong interest from other local players and non-RGU players and they will be important and will form the backbone of the team during times that students may be away from Aberdeen or are on placements and things like that.
“It’s really important that we have that mixture of people from different places within the group and I think it will make for an exciting team and the diverse nature will encourage others to join in the future too.”
The new team is set to hit the ground running in 2026/27 and will be playing in the Caledonia Aspiring Series.
Fixtures are still being confirmed and Bremner added: “The long-term plan is to keep building and to be able to join a regular league, but first we need to prove we can sustain numbers to achieve that.
“The Caledonia Aspiring Series is a good way to kick everything off and I’d say that if you are new to rugby and want to give it a go then you absolutely should.
“This is a ‘beginner friendly’ team at Grammar that is full of women that are welcoming and are here to make friends while playing a sport we all love.
“Joining the team you will not only gain you rugby skills, but a great social network too.”
