Aberdeen Grammar are third in National Three after they also came through a close game at home with West of Scotland beaten 25-24 at Rubislaw.
West went 7-0 up early on, but then a penalty by Dan McElderry and tries from skipper Craig Shepherd and Fraser Christie, with McElderry converting both, had the home side 17-7. A late penalty in the half then saw McElderry extend the lead to 20-7 at the interval.
In the second half, West of Scotland ran in three tries to take a 24-20 with around 10 minutes to go. Alistair Fitzgerald then scored a try for Grammar five minutes from the end, but the tightly fought contest was not over with West missing a late penalty that would have allowed them to retake the lead.
Grammar then managed to regroup and see out the closing stages to secure a hard fought and important win.
AGR head coach Justin Taljaard is also a happy man after Aberdeen Grammar’s 25-24 win over West of Scotland at Rubislaw leaves them third in the National Three standings.
“I was really happy with how the team performed challenging conditions and circumstances with us missing 10 first team squad players due to injury or unavailability,” Taljaard said.
“The entire squad stepped up and we are well positioned to keep going forwards as a lot of our injured players should be returning over the coming weeks.
“A noteworthy mention this week should go to Zain Malik making his debut off the bench. It was a special moment for the club as Zain is the first Aberdeen Grammar under-18 graduate to debut in the senior 1st XV since the under-18s got up and running again.”
